Faure Requiem By Candlelight
Old St Paul's Church
Tickets available exclusively from Edinburgh Festival Fringe
www.edfringe.com
A return after four sell-out years of this atmospheric late-night performance by candlelight of Faure's much-loved Requiem and Cantique de Jean Racine, with intimate orchestral forces, in the hauntingly beautiful setting of Old St Paul's, a hidden Edinburgh gem. Directed by Vincent Wallace, these shows have proved incredibly popular with festival-goers since first appearing in 2006. 'Anthemic passages praising G-D echo round the impressive church lit by a thousand candles ... this essay in benediction deserves its canonic status. The encore was well-merited' (ThreeWeeks 2009).
Previous Concerts
Haydn's Paukenmesse and Te Deum (Poster)
The St Andrew Camerata are presenting a concert featuring music from the Classical period on May 29th in Old Saint Paul's, Jeffrey Street. The main pieces performed will be Haydn's Paukenmesse and Te Deum; the concert however will also include a little-known motet by Sussmayr (1766-1803); and, more uniquely, two pieces by Jose Mauricio Nunes Garcia (1767-1830). Nunes Garcia, an Afro-Brazilian composer, was heavily influenced by Haydn, and his works should provide a neat thematic link to the works of the famous Austrian composer. Tickets for this concert are priced at £10 and £8 conc. and are available in advance from the Usher Hall Box Office, or at the concert itself.
